PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – J.J. Spaun shot a bogey-free 4-under-par 66 to take the lead after the first round of the U.S. Open on June 13, 2025, at Oakmont Country Club. His performance put him one stroke ahead of South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence, who finished the day at 3-under 67.

Two-time champion Brooks Koepka ended the round tied for third, shooting a 2-under 68. He is joined by Si Woo Kim and Sungjae Im, both of whom also concluded their rounds at 2-under.

Tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler, along with defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, struggled, both finishing with 3-over 73s. Masters champion Rory McIlroy shot a 4-over 74, putting him at a disadvantage early in the tournament.

The second round is scheduled to begin at 6:45 a.m. ET on Friday, June 14.

In a surprising turn, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen had a stellar opening but slipped back to 2-under after a series of mistakes on the back nine. Meanwhile, Patrick Reed, who recorded an albatross on hole 4, fell back with a triple-bogey on hole 18, finishing the day at 3-over.

Despite a rough finish, other notable players remained in contention. Jon Rahm finished his round at 1-under, while Sungjae Im ended at 2-under, despite a late bogey.

The challenging conditions at Oakmont have proven tough for many players, and the leaderboard could change dramatically as the tournament progresses.

As for Spaun, his steady play has set the pace, and he aims to capitalize on his strong start in the following rounds.
