June Spencer, the iconic British actress best known for her role as Peggy Woolley (formerly Archer) on the long-running BBC Radio 4 soap opera The Archers, has passed away at the age of 105. Her family announced her peaceful death on November 9, 2024.

Spencer was a cornerstone of The Archers since its inception in 1951, continuing her role until her retirement in 2022. Her character, Peggy Woolley, was a central figure in the show, and her portrayal spanned over seven decades, making her a beloved and enduring presence in British radio drama.

Mohit Bakaya, Controller of Radio 4, paid a heartfelt tribute to Spencer, highlighting her significant impact on the show and its listeners. “June Spencer has been a longstanding presence and companion for Radio 4 listeners during her exceptional run on The Archers. Many have grown up with June as Peggy and listened as she journeyed through life’s many chapters, with all of its ups and downs,” Bakaya said.

Jeremy Howe, Editor of The Archers, also praised Spencer, describing her as a legend and a brilliant actress. “Working with June was like working with a legend, and has been one of the great privileges of my time at the BBC,” Howe remarked. He noted her impeccable technique, precision, and flawless delivery, as well as her warm and sharp personality off the air.
