Spike Lee’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ Set for Cannes Premiere

CANNES, France — The highly anticipated crime thriller ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ directed by Spike Lee will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. The film features an ensemble cast including Denzel Washington, A$AP Rocky, and Jeffrey Wright and is set to hit theaters on August 22, followed by a streaming release on Apple TV+ starting September 5.
‘Highest 2 Lowest’ is a modern reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa‘s classic 1963 film ‘High and Low,’ which revolved around a businessman faced with a moral dilemma regarding ransom and wealth. The film’s screenplay was penned by William Alan Fox and inspired by Ed McBain‘s novel ‘The King’s Ransom.’
Spike Lee shared his thoughts on the film, highlighting how his exposure to world cinema influenced his career. ‘From the very beginning of my career, I was influenced by Kurosawa,’ Lee said. He also noted that the film represents the fifth collaboration between him and Washington, a partnership that includes celebrated titles like ‘Malcolm X’ and ‘Inside Man.’
‘I’m just glad we got five in,’ said Lee about working with Washington. The film also stars Ilfenesh Hadera, Ice Spice, Dean Winters, and John Douglas Thompson. It started production in New York City in 2024 under the direction of cinematographer Matthew Libatique.
‘When a titan music mogul is targeted with a ransom plot, he becomes entangled in a life-or-death situation,’ the film’s synopsis reveals, setting the stage for a gripping story set on the streets of New York City. The teaser trailer, which has recently been released, hints at the high stakes and intense drama that audiences can expect.
Lee expressed excitement about the project and the collaboration with A$AP Rocky, who plays Washington’s onscreen son. ‘He ain’t backing up. Like, ‘I’m here too,’ Lee noted. The film aims to blend elements of suspense with a strong moral narrative, drawing from the rich storytelling traditions of both Lee and Kurosawa.
‘Highest 2 Lowest’ is not just a film but an exploration of ethics within a fast-paced industry, making it relevant in today’s society as it tackles themes of wealth, responsibility, and moral choices.
