Starbucks Offers Free Coffee to Ease Post-Super Bowl Monday Blues
NEW YORK — Starbucks is offering a rare treat to help Americans survive the notoriously sluggish Monday after the Super Bowl. On Monday, Feb. 10, the coffee giant will provide free tall-sized (12-ounce) hot or iced brewed coffee to Starbucks Rewards members nationwide.
Under CEO Brian Niccol, who joined the company in 2024, Starbucks has scaled back discounts and promotions to focus on improving profitability. However, the chain is making an exception to coincide with one of the most fatigue-heavy Mondays of the year. According to estimates, more than 22 million Americans may call in sick the day after the Super Bowl, making it one of the highest sick-day rates of the year.
To redeem the offer, Starbucks Rewards members can access a coupon through the Starbucks app on Monday. The deal can be used for in-person orders, mobile app purchases, or drive-thru visits. Non-members can sign up for free by Feb. 9 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time to receive the coupon automatically.
The promotion aligns with Niccol’s broader efforts to revamp the Starbucks experience. Recent changes include bringing back condiment bars, offering free refills for in-café customers, and personalizing cups with handwritten messages. While some baristas have expressed that the personalized cup initiative has slowed service, the company believes these efforts will strengthen customer connections.
“We’re bringing back the Starbucks you love,” Niccol said in a statement. “This is just the beginning of our ‘Back to Starbucks’ mission, and we’re excited to roll out more customer-focused initiatives in the coming months.”
The free coffee offer is part of a series of advertisements airing during and after the Super Bowl. A 60-second commercial will highlight the company’s renewed focus on its coffee roots, while a 15-second spot will promote Monday’s deal.
Starbucks plans to simplify its menu by 30% in the coming months to reduce wait times and enhance customer satisfaction. The company has also tweaked its name to “Starbucks Coffee Company” to emphasize its core product.
While the NFL has not announced plans to move the Super Bowl to Presidents Day weekend, coffee lovers can at least count on a free caffeine boost to tackle the post-game Monday grind.
