Pittsburgh Steelers Brandin Echols Nfl Free Agency

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed cornerback Brandin Echols to bolster their defense, as the NFL’s free agency period commenced on March 12, 2025.

According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, Echols, a former sixth-round pick by the New York Jets in 2021, spent the last four seasons with New York. He has appeared in 57 games and made 19 starts, totaling 122 tackles, 16 passes defensed, and five interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns (pick-sixes).

In 2024, Echols played 16 games, starting four, and registered 40 tackles, two interceptions, and three pass breakups. He was involved in 407 defensive snaps and contributed 185 snaps on special teams. His rookie season was noteworthy as he logged a career-high 760 defensive snaps, about 77 percent of the Jets’ total defensive plays at the time.

Despite his earlier success, Echols had limited playing time in his last two seasons, leading to a change of scenery in Pittsburgh. Steelers General Manager Omar Khan commented on the acquisition, stating, “We believe Brandin has the talent and determination to revitalize his career here with us.”

Additionally, the Jets also made key moves, signing cornerback Brandon Stephens to a three-year, $36 million deal. A former third-round pick of the Ravens, Stephens started all 17 games for Baltimore last season, recording 70 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, and ten passes defended. His performance earned him a pass rush grade of 92.9 from Pro Football Focus.

As teams across the league finalize their rosters in anticipation of the new season, free agency has already witnessed significant player movements in various positions, with many franchises looking to shore up their weaknesses for the coming year. The salary cap, raised from $255.4 million to $279.2 million per team for the current season, is expected to provide teams with greater flexibility for strategic acquisitions.

As the free agency frenzy continues, more transactions and contract signings are anticipated across the league, keeping fans and analysts on full alert for roster changes. In this exciting time, the Steelers hope Echols will add considerable depth to their defense and contribute to their plans for the upcoming season.
