Struggles Continue For Former Star Gift Motupa As Clubs Pass On Contract Offers

Former top-flight star Gift Motupa continues to face challenges in rediscovering his peak form, with clubs hesitating to offer him a contract. After standout performances at Orlando Pirates and Wits University FC, Motupa’s career took a downturn when he struggled for regular playing time at Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 29-year-old forward was released by Sundowns in January, prompting speculation about his next move. Despite rumors linking him with SuperSport United, it was his former Wits coach Gavin Hunt who extended a lifeline during the AFCON break.

Hunt invited Motupa to showcase his abilities during training sessions and friendly matches with the team. However, the experienced coach expressed concerns over Motupa’s fitness level, stating that the player was overweight and needed to shed some kilos to reach peak condition.

Although Motupa spent two weeks with SuperSport United, Hunt ultimately decided not to offer him a contract at this time, insisting that any decisions would be made at the end of the season. With Motupa now a free agent, he has the opportunity to explore other offers from potential suitors.

Throughout his career, Motupa has amassed over 130 domestic appearances across various competitions, scoring close to 40 goals for different clubs. His stint at Mamelodi Sundowns since 2020 saw him contribute two goals and two assists in 22 matches.

SuperSport United, currently competing in multiple fronts including the CAF Confederations Cup and the league, are seeking to bolster their squad depth. Hunt noted the team’s abundance of young talent but acknowledged the need for experienced players like Motupa to provide additional support.
