In a heartfelt tribute to commemorate Juneteenth, the family of the renowned Dodgers legend, Jackie Robinson, and the esteemed Friends of Jackie Robinson Park from Sun Village were honored during the recent Board of Supervisors meeting by Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger underscored the significance of Juneteenth as a reminder of the enduring struggle for justice and equality for all individuals in society. She expressed gratitude towards the Friends of Jackie Robinson Park for their dedicated efforts in upholding the Juneteenth tradition, educating communities, and fostering celebrations that honor the essence of the holiday. The festivities held at the historic Jackie Robinson Park carry deep meaning, as the park’s namesake serves as a symbol of hope and inspiration for the fight for equality.

Jackie Robinson, a Pasadena native, had strong connections to the Fifth District of Los Angeles County. Kathy Young Robinson, the daughter of Olympic silver medalist Mack Robinson and niece of Jackie Robinson, emphasized the importance of preserving and perpetuating her family’s legacy. She expressed gratitude towards Supervisor Barger and the Board of Supervisors for recognizing the enduring legacy of her uncle, Jackie Robinson, and for celebrating the historic significance of Jackie Robinson Park situated in the Antelope Valley. Kathy Young Robinson also paid tribute to her father, Mack Robinson, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping her family’s history and continuing to carry forward their legacy.

Established in 1965 in Sun Village, Jackie Robinson Park holds the distinction of being the first park in the United States to be named in honor of a prominent figure in baseball history. The park’s historical importance was officially recognized in 2022 when the County designated it as a historic landmark, underscoring its enduring significance in preserving the memory and legacy of Jackie Robinson, Major League Baseball‘s pioneering African American player.
