Big Bear Bald Eagle Family Reunion

BIG BEAR VALLEY, Calif. (VVNG.com) — The Big Bear bald eagle family had a heartwarming reunion on June 3, 2025, the day after Sunny’s first flight away from the nest. According to a report from Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), the day began with Gizmo alone in the nest tree after Sunny’s departure.

Shadow, their father, delivered a fish to the nest. Gizmo tried to claim the fish, snapping at Shadow in an effort to protect her food. When their mother Jackie arrived, she allowed Gizmo to have the fish, which observers interpreted as survival training.

“Shadow and Jackie seemed to be challenging Gizmo to make her fight for the fish… like survival training,” the update noted. “But also letting her win.” Sunny, who had landed at a nearby tree, soon returned to the nest to join her siblings.

Sunny marked her return with a powerful landing that sent twigs raining down on her family. After surveying the situation, she confidently walked over to take the fish from Jackie, while Gizmo attempted to wrest it away. However, Sunny efficiently swallowed the remainder of the fish, demonstrating her authority.

The rest of the day was calm as Sunny rested in the nest, sharing space with Gizmo. Inspired by her sister’s flight, Gizmo practiced her wing flapping, or “wingersizing,” preparing for her upcoming turn to fly.

Both eaglets are reportedly thriving under their parents’ care. FOBBV noted that it is normal for fledgling eagles to return to the nest after their first flights.

Sunny and Gizmo are expected to stay in their natal territory for one to three more months, continuing to learn survival skills from Jackie and Shadow before eventually venturing out on their own.
