Suns Trade 2031 First-Round Pick for Three Future Draft Selections
PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Phoenix Suns made a bold move Tuesday, trading their 2031 unprotected first-round draft pick to the Utah Jazz in exchange for three future first-round selections. The deal, reported by NBA insider Shams Charania, signals the Suns’ aggressive pursuit of roster upgrades, potentially including Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler.
The Suns acquired the least favorable first-round picks in 2025 from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, or Utah Jazz (protected); in 2027 from Cleveland, Minnesota, or Utah; and in 2029 from Cleveland, Minnesota (protected), or Utah. The trade triples Phoenix’s available first-round draft capital, providing flexibility ahead of the NBA trade deadline.
“This move unlocks our next six drafts and breaks up our lone tradable first-round pick in 2031 into three firsts,” a Suns spokesperson said. The 2025 pick is likely to be Cleveland’s, as the Cavaliers currently hold the NBA’s best record.
For Utah, the trade consolidates first-round picks acquired in previous deals, giving the Jazz 11 first-round selections over the next seven years. The 2031 unprotected pick from Phoenix is considered a valuable long-term asset for the rebuilding franchise.
The Suns’ strategy appears aimed at facilitating a potential blockbuster trade for Butler, who has reportedly listed Phoenix among his preferred destinations. By splitting the 2031 pick into three, the Suns can offer more immediate value to teams like Miami, which may not prioritize distant draft assets.
Phoenix’s front office, led by assistant general manager Matt Tellem, has shown a willingness to engage in complex, multi-team trades. The team previously dealt additional first-round pick swaps, acquiring second-round picks from Memphis and Orlando to bolster its draft capital.
However, the move carries significant risks. The Suns are currently in a play-in spot, holding an 8% chance of jumping into the top four of the draft lottery. If any of the traded picks land in the top 10, it could haunt the franchise for years to come.
Despite the gamble, the Suns remain focused on their championship aspirations. “The win condition here is obviously a championship,” said an NBA analyst. “All of this is worth it if they reach that goal.”
