Tate McRae Teases New Album as “Fierce Era”
Canadian pop artist Tate McRae has hinted that her forthcoming album will usher in what she describes as her “fierce era.” This development follows the release of her 2023 album, ‘Think Later.’ McRae has revealed that her live performance persona, Tatiana, plays a significant role in shaping the new body of work. Tatiana, who McRae characterizes as embodying “confident girl power,” is the inspiration behind many of the new tracks.
Reflecting on her artistic evolution, McRae shared with GRAMMY.com, stating, “The next album is coming along, which is a crazy thing to say. All the music I’m creating right now definitely feels like a fierce era for me; a lot of it is inspired by performing.” She elaborated on how touring has enabled her to discover “another identity” within herself. “I always say that there is Tate, and my alter ego, Tatiana, takes over when I’m performing,” she explained. As such, the new songs reflect this dynamic, assertive persona that emerges on stage.
At the age of 21, McRae is recognized not only for her vocal talents but also for her choreography, which she incorporates into her concerts. She emphasized the importance of live performances in shaping her music, saying, “I don’t get a ‘feel’ for my albums until I’ve performed the songs onstage.” The visual elements are equally crucial, as she aims to create a cohesive world that aligns with her music. “Visually, it’s so important for me to create a world and have all the pieces connect together to the album,” McRae noted.
As fans await the release of the album, McRae expressed her excitement about the upcoming tours that will accompany it. “I’m excited to translate that feeling to touring and performing because that’s when I really feel the album for the first time,” she remarked. Although the thematic color schemes for the album remain undecided, she mentioned the colors for ‘Think Later’ were “blues, blacks, whites, and greys,” leaving fans anticipating how the aesthetics of her “fierce era” will unfold.
