SELMA, Ala. (AP) – A 14-year-old boy has died following a shooting in Selma early Saturday morning, prompting the arrest of a 17-year-old male in connection with the incident. Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1400 block of Weaver Street at approximately 1:55 a.m.

Selma Police confirmed the victim’s identity as Jamarj Acoff after the Selma City Schools system issued a statement regarding the tragedy. In a message sent to parents, Interim Superintendent Darryl Aikerson expressed condolences to Acoff’s family, friends, and classmates. “This is a challenging time for us all as we deal with the loss,” Aikerson said. “To honor Jamarj’s memory and support each other, we must come together as a community in the days ahead.”

Acoff was discovered with fatal injuries at the scene, leading to an immediate investigation by the Selma Police Department Criminal Investigation Division. Lt. Ray Blanks stated that a black male juvenile, aged 17, was arrested later that afternoon at around 12:20 p.m. on charges of murder. The suspect is currently being held at the Perry County Detention Center without bond pending a hearing. Police have not released the suspect’s name.

At this time, a motive for the shooting has not been determined, and investigators are actively looking for more information. “The motive of the shooting is unknown at this time. The investigation is ongoing,” Lt. Blanks said.

In response to the incident, Selma City Schools announced that counseling services would be available to students starting Monday to help them cope with the loss of their classmate. The tragic event has shaken the local community, prompting calls for unity and support.

“We must unite and support each other during this difficult time,” Aikerson added in the school’s message. “It is important that we keep the family in our thoughts and allow them the privacy they deserve.”
