Teen Golfer Mason Howell Qualifies for U.S. Open at Age 17

Atlanta, Georgia — Seventeen-year-old Mason Howell has made headlines after qualifying for the 2025 U.S. Open by posting an impressive score of 18-under-par over two rounds. The high school junior from Thomasville achieved this feat at Piedmont Driving Club on Monday, showcasing his talent among a competitive field.
Howell shot scores of 63 in both rounds, tying for first place with Jackson Buchanan, a 22-year-old professional golfer. The two earned the coveted spots to compete at the upcoming U.S. Open, scheduled at Oakmont Country Club.
After successfully completing the qualifying event, Howell expressed his excitement. “That was one of the greatest moments of my life,” he said, reflecting on the emotional experience of hugging his parents after finishing his final hole.
This qualifying event, known as “Golf’s Longest Day,” is demanding as it requires players to complete 36 holes in one day. Howell managed to navigate through the challenges without a single bogey.
In addition to his recent achievement, Howell is recognized as one of the top junior golfers in the nation. Currently ranked No. 8 by the American Junior Golf Association, his journey in golf began at an early age.
Howell is also coming off a successful season with the Brookwood High School golf team, which recently clinched its fourth state title in five years. As he looks to the future, Howell has committed to playing for the Georgia Bulldogs, furthering his golf career while still finishing high school.
The young golfer’s recent victory at the qualifier not only demonstrates his potential but also places him in a unique position to gain valuable experience on a prestigious stage. Howell plans to leverage this opportunity to enhance his skills and prepare for a long-term golf career.
