Temple University Marching Band Macy's Day Parade

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Temple University’s Diamond Marching Band is gearing up for its upcoming performance in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday. This year marks a historic milestone as the band celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Director of Athletic Bands Matt Brunner announced the exciting news, stating, “It is the 100th anniversary of the Diamond Marching Band, and we are performing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.” The nearly 200-member ensemble, which has evolved from just 40 members in its early years, will showcase a variety of music.

Josephine Gil, a flutist, expressed her excitement and nerves saying, “I’m kind of nervous because there will be so many cameras. But I’m really excited because I love everyone I’m doing this with.” The band’s selection for the parade followed a competitive application process in which hundreds of bands competed for a spot.

The Diamond Band will perform a medley of songs, including holiday classics and popular tunes unique to Philadelphia. Many members, like drum major Anuja Nanavaty, feel honored to represent their school, saying, “There are so many years of tradition that we get to represent.”

In preparation, the band rehearses three times a week. Matt Brunner noted, “Honestly, I don’t feel pressure, I feel excitement. The students are looking forward to this.” The performance will be the band’s first in the parade, which has taken place since 1924. The event will be broadcast on NBC starting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Senior trumpet player Michael Iwan shared his views on the importance of their rehearsals, stating, “We have some dance moves we do as we’re going down the street. Being a part of this band is something special.”

As for upcoming plans, a public rehearsal will be held at Geasey Field on Monday, inviting fans to get a sneak peek of their parade performance.

With a mix of excitement and nostalgia, senior piccolo player Saniyah Davis emphasizes the significance of their performance, saying, “It’s exciting to see all the work we’ve done throughout the season to finally come to this point.”
