Ten Dead in School Shooting in Graz, Austria

GRAZ, Austria – A shooting occurred at a school in the Lend district around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, resulting in at least ten confirmed deaths, including the shooter, according to reports from “Krone”. The tragic incident marks a dark moment just before the tenth anniversary of a similar attack that left three dead in Graz in 2015.
In response to the incident, Graz Mayor Elke Kahr stated it was a “terrible tragedy” and confirmed that all political events have been canceled across party lines. Kahr visited the scene and reported that many injured individuals are receiving treatment at local hospitals.
Emergency services and crisis intervention teams are currently on-site. A portion of the students and teachers has been relocated to the Helmut-List-Halle for safety, and family reunification is happening at the ASKÖ-Halle. Kahr emphasized, “Classes will continue in the coming days, but the curriculum must take a back seat as the community processes the events.”
Mario Kunasek, the Governor of Styria, expressed his shock about the shooting. He stated, “It is unimaginable what has happened today in Graz. As a father, I am deeply affected by this terrible act that has caused so much pain.” Kunasek is in constant communication with the Interior Minister and local police, promising further updates as more information becomes available.
A press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. with federal Chancellor Christian Stocker. Politicians across Austria are expressing their condolences, including Vienna Mayor, who urged society to unite in such somber times. “Our response must be a stronger commitment to solidarity and respect,” the mayor said.
Austria’s Foreign Minister added her heartfelt condolences, describing the incident as unfathomable and urging compassion for the victims and their families.
