KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team (20-4, 7-4 SEC) is holding the No. 1 seed line as tournament projections gear up. As of Monday, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi predicts the Vols will face No. 16 Bryant in the West Regional during the NCAA Tournament, which culminates in San Francisco. The Vols are coming off a crucial victory against Florida on Feb. 1 as they prepare for an important matchup against No. 18 Kentucky on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET at Rupp Arena.
The Vols will also host Vanderbilt on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET at Food City Center, seeking to avenge earlier defeats to both teams this season. Tennessee lost to Vanderbilt by just one point (76-75) on Jan. 18 and fell to Kentucky 78-73 on Jan. 28.
According to Lunardi, the Vols are placed as a potential No. 1 seed in both the West and East Regionals, providing them with various paths as Selection Sunday approaches on March 16. Should they move on, they could face notable matchups against Gonzaga or Ohio State in subsequent rounds.
Tennessee boasts an impressive 8-4 record in Quad 1 games, with all four of their losses occurring in this category. These results include three significant Quad 1 victories against Louisville and Illinois on the road, along with a neutral-site win over Baylor during the Baha Mar Championship. Additionally, their home wins against Mississippi State, Florida, and Missouri also qualify as Quad 1 victories.
In the context of their performance this season, the Vols are 2-0 in Quad 2 games, winning home contests against Arkansas and Georgia. They have a strong showing in lower-tier games, going 3-0 in Quad 3 and 7-0 in Quad 4 games.
Tennessee has firmly established itself in the NCAA landscape, making six consecutive tournament appearances since Coach Rick Barnes took over in the 2017-18 season. Prior to Barnes’ tenure, UT had not made the tournament since 2014. Notably, the Volunteers reached their second Elite Eight in program history during the 2024 season.
Over the years, Tennessee has made ten NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the Sweet 16 in 2019 and 2023 and earning a top-5 seed in each of their six tournament appearances under Barnes.
On the injury front, Felix Okpara was listed as probable for the game against Kentucky on Monday’s SEC injury report due to a left ankle injury. The 6-foot-11 forward has started every game this season, averaging 7.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting an impressive 60% from the field. His defensive presence has been instrumental for the Vols.
Okpara’s status is critical as the team approaches this challenging stretch. His contributions, especially following a foot injury that required surgery last season, have bolstered the Vols’ lineup significantly.
The SEC has implemented a new student-athlete availability report this season, essential for ensuring accurate player status before games. Schools must report any known issues that may affect a player’s participation, or face financial penalties for non-compliance.
