Tesla Cybertruck Submerged In Water

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — A Tesla Cybertruck sank Monday morning at Ventura Harbor while its owner attempted to launch a jet ski. Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly before 11 a.m., where they discovered the vehicle completely submerged.

According to the Ventura City Fire Department, the incident occurred when the truck, which was parked on a boat ramp, unexpectedly rolled into the water. Fire Battalion Chief Mike Gonzalez stated, “The driver managed to escape the vehicle before it sank, avoiding injury.” The Cybertruck’s owner was later assessed but did not require medical attention.

Firefighters deployed a diver to attach towing cables to the overturned truck. After several attempts, crews successfully pulled the Cybertruck from the depths, revealing it filled with seawater. Water poured out from several openings, including an apparently open driver’s window.

The incident appears to contradict claims made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in 2022 that the Cybertruck would be “waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat.” Musk has previously suggested that the vehicle could traverse bodies of water under certain conditions, though many experts caution against using any electric vehicle in waterways.

Following the mishap, local authorities emphasized the importance of adhering to safety precautions while launching watercraft. “We advise all vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are secure and follow proper launch procedures,” Gonzalez added.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with watercraft and motor vehicles. While Tesla’s marketing may promise a versatile experience, the reality of submerged electronics raises significant concerns about long-term vehicle viability after exposure to saltwater.

As investigations continue, local officials have not shared further details regarding any potential repercussions for the truck’s owner. Meanwhile, the Cybertruck remains a topic of conversation among the automotive community, highlighting the ambitious claims versus real-world applications.

The Ventura City Fire Department expressed gratitude for the teamwork displayed during the recovery operation, which included assistance from Vessel Assist, Tow Boat US, and the Coast Guard. The agencies reported no injuries arising from the event.
