Texas Faces Elimination After Loss to UTSA in NCAA Baseball Regional

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns faced a critical setback on Saturday as they were defeated by UTSA, 9-7, in the Austin Regional of the NCAA Baseball Championship. With this loss, Texas now needs to win three games in two days to advance past the regional stage.
The Longhorns had a promising start, leading 6-1 after the third inning. However, UTSA rallied back, scoring 8 runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Texas was unable to regain the lead, with only a solo home run from Ryan Galvan in the seventh adding to their score.
“It was frustrating to see our lead disappear so quickly,” said Longhorns head coach David Pierce. “We had chances but couldn’t convert, and credit to UTSA for their comeback.”
Texas’ defeat came after a challenging stretch in May, where they were swept by Arkansas, lost two of three against Florida, and struggled against Oklahoma. They had hoped to turn things around after their earlier victory against Houston Christian, where they won 7-1 in the opening round.
The Longhorns will now face Kansas State at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday in an elimination game. The winner of that matchup will take on UTSA again later in the day.
The Austin Regional also hosts other key teams, with the winner likely to face No. 15 UCLA, UC Irvine, or Fresno State in the upcoming Super Regional.
Fans can catch the action on ESPN as the tournament progresses toward the Men’s College World Series, which begins June 13 in Omaha, Nebraska.
