ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers have placed right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning on outright waivers, a move reported by multiple sources on March 23, 2025. Dunning, who has not been designated for assignment, remains part of the Rangers organization, allowing him to participate in workouts and potentially pitch for the team while on waivers.

Any team that claims Dunning will assume his contract, which includes a salary of $2.66 million for the upcoming 2025 season. Dunning will be available for a 48-hour claim period. If he goes unclaimed, the Rangers could choose to send him to the minor leagues, although they are not obligated to do so.

Dunning, who turned 30 years old this month, was originally selected as the 29th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Washington Nationals. He was subsequently traded to the Chicago White Sox in the same year, along with Reynaldo López and Lucas Giolito, in exchange for outfielder Adam Eaton. Dunning made his MLB debut in 2020, where he recorded a 3.97 ERA over 34 innings in seven starts.

In 2021, he joined the Rangers in a trade that sent starting pitcher Lance Lynn to the White Sox. Dunning had a challenging start to his career in Texas, finishing his first two years with a cumulative 4.48 ERA over 271 innings. However, the 2023 season marked a turning point, as he emerged as a reliable mid-rotation starter, posting a 3.70 ERA over 172 2/3 innings in 35 appearances, leading to the Rangers’ first World Series title.

Despite his impressive performance in 2023, Dunning struggled in 2024, finishing with a career-high 5.31 ERA in 26 appearances, due in part to shoulder issues. His spring training performance further complicated his situation, as he recorded an 8.18 ERA over 11 innings while striking out 14 batters.

As the Rangers prepare for the upcoming season, the emergence of top pitching prospects Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker has contributed to Dunning’s uncertain status with the team. Additionally, Texas signed veteran pitcher Patrick Corbin, which could further limit Dunning’s role. Sources indicate the Rangers are looking to create roster space and may consider veteran Adrian Houser for a swingman position.

“This move is surprising given the depth issues,” said an anonymous league insider. “Dunning has been a versatile arm and contributor even if he hasn’t been a superstar. It raises questions about the Raptors’ pitching strategy as they head into the season.”

As the claim period unfolds, many speculate on Dunning’s future, with several teams potentially interested in his services. His ability to bounce back from struggles could make him a valuable addition to another team’s pitching staff.
