Texas Renaissance Festival Founder George Coulam Found Dead at Home

TODD MISSION, Texas — Authorities are investigating the death of George “King George” Coulam, founder of the Texas Renaissance Festival. Coulam was found dead at his home on the morning of May 21, 2025, at approximately 9 a.m., according to Grimes County Sheriff Donald Sowell.
The circumstances surrounding Coulam’s death are currently unclear, and the sheriff’s office has not disclosed the cause of death. This incident has drawn significant attention, given Coulam’s prominent role in the festival’s history and his recent legal troubles.
Coulam started the Texas Renaissance Festival in 1974, and it has since grown into the largest event of its kind in the United States, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Known affectionately as “King George” by festivalgoers, he served as its leader for nearly five decades and was also the mayor of Todd Mission until losing his position in the recent May elections.
Legal issues have recently plagued Coulam. A judge ordered him to sell the festival and associated properties after he allegedly backed out of a $60 million sale agreement, which resulted in a ruling against him. The plaintiffs were awarded $22 million in damages and $1 million in legal fees.
Despite these challenges, officials have stated that preparations for the 2025 festival season will proceed as planned, ensuring the legacy of the event continues. This is a developing story, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
