Three American Men Reach ATP Top 10 for First Time in Nearly 20 Years

LONDON — American tennis players have made history as three men have entered the ATP top 10 rankings for the first time in nearly two decades. The announcement was made on Monday, with Tommy Paul rising two spots to No. 10. Paul joins fellow Americans Taylor Fritz at No. 4 and Ben Shelton at No. 8 in the top 10.
This milestone brings to mind the last time three U.S. men found themselves in the top 10, which was back in April 2006, when Andy Roddick was ranked No. 4, James Blake was at No. 7, and Andre Agassi held the No. 10 spot.
On the women’s side, the United States is also well represented. This week, four American women placed in the WTA’s top 10 rankings, including Jessica Pegula at No. 2, Coco Gauff at No. 3, Madison Keys at No. 6, and Amanda Anisimova at No. 9. Iga Swiatek remains the top-ranked woman.
Fritz not only matched his career high ranking but also captured the Stuttgart Open title. The 26-year-old achieved this feat without dropping serve throughout the tournament, defeating Alexander Zverev, the top seed, in the final match. “I’m really happy. Not so great clay-court season, so to come here and start the grass-court season perfectly, I’m super-happy,” Fritz said after his victory.
Shelton, a rising star at just 22 years old, is in his third full season on the tour. He won the NCAA singles title in 2022 and has reached the semifinals in two Grand Slam tournaments. He successfully climbed the rankings, showcasing his potential as a formidable player to watch.
The new rankings reflect a growing strength in American men’s tennis, a welcome sign for fans and the sport alike.
