Tigers and Giants Rise in MLB Playoff Race Amid Injuries

DETROIT, Mich. — The 2025 MLB season is shaping up as a thrilling contest, particularly for teams that started with low playoff odds. The Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants, both with less than 50% playoff projections, have surged ahead as surprise contenders.
The Tigers, who began their season with a 41.2% chance of making the playoffs, have shown remarkable performance. They hit 60 home runs in their first 47 games, a pace that suggests they could break the previous season’s mark of 162 home runs. Their on-base percentage has improved significantly, contributing to an increase in runs per game from 4.21 to 5.38.
Star players like Spencer Torkelson and Casey Mize have rejuvenated the team. Torkelson, recovering from a tough 2024, already has 12 home runs this season, while Mize boasts a 6-1 record with a 2.53 ERA. With both players performing exceptionally, many are asking whether this could be the best Tigers team in history, outpacing even the 1984 club that won 104 games.
Meanwhile, the Giants, initially given a 19% playoff chance, are also showing promise. Their relief pitchers, including Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval, have been outstanding, combining for a 1.27 ERA in 78 innings. Despite struggles in the starting rotation, which has not been as reliable, the bullpen’s strong performance provides hope for sustaining their success.
As for the Cardinals, their early season success saw them post a 12-1 record between May 4 and May 17, raising their chances after a slow start. Players like Nolan Arenado and Mason Wynn have significantly contributed to their resurgence. However, there remain concerns about their strikeout rate, which may hinder their playoff aspirations.
Despite facing tough matchups and internal challenges, both the Tigers and Giants have shown resilience in the quest for a playoff spot. As the season progresses, they will need to maintain their momentum in order to secure a place in October.
