Tigers Look to Extend Winning Streak Against Yankees

DETROIT, Michigan — The Detroit Tigers aim to continue their winning momentum as they host the New York Yankees for the second game of a three-game series on Tuesday afternoon. After a strong showing on Monday, the Tigers seek to secure their fifth consecutive victory and a solid start at Comerica Park in the 2025 season.
In the opening matchup on Monday, Detroit triumphed over the Yankees with a decisive 4-1 score. Casey Mize delivered an impressive performance, marking his first quality start of the season with six innings pitched, allowing one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts. Mize’s success on the mound guided him to his first victory after being the top pick in the draft.
Highlighting the game was a crucial three-run homer by Andy Ibañez that solidified the Tigers’ lead. The bullpen contributed with solid relief, limiting the Yankees to just one additional run for the remainder of the game. Manager AJ Hinch expressed satisfaction with the team’s effort, noting, “The guys played hard and executed the game plan well.”
In anticipation of Tuesday’s game, the Tigers will send Tarik Skubal to the mound, who has struggled early in the season despite winning the American League Cy Young Award last year. Skubal, with an 0-2 record and a 5.91 ERA, faces off against New York’s Carlos Carrasco, who comes in with a 1-0 record but a 7.36 ERA.
Skubal’s first two outings this season have been rocky, showing signs of a slow start compared to his previous campaign. He has yet to finish five innings and has given up a minimum of three runs per game. In his latest outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he struck out eight but also allowed three walks and a home run.
“It’s definitely been a challenge for me early on,” Skubal admitted. “But I’m focused on improving with every pitch and helping the team win.”
Conversely, Carrasco also faces challenges, having allowed significant runs in his last appearances. Despite a rough outing against the Baltimore Orioles, he managed to secure a win in his previous start against the New York Yankees, showcasing resilience and experience in his 16th big league season.
The game is set for 1:10 p.m. ET at Comerica Park, where the Tigers look to capitalize on their home-field advantage and continue their winning streak. The team is eager to build on their early-season performance, and success today could set a positive tone for the remainder of the series.
