Tigers’ Smith Celebrates MLB Debut After Birthday Surprise

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kerry Smith celebrated his 25th birthday just two days ago, and now he is celebrating his first taste of the big leagues. The Detroit Tigers called him up from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, May 30, before their series opener against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Smith will make his MLB debut today.
“One of the best birthday gifts I’ve ever had,” Smith said.
The right-hander was selected by the Tigers as their third-round pick in the 2021 draft. He began his professional career as a starting pitcher, but injuries shortened his 2023 and 2024 campaigns. In 2025, he successfully transitioned to the bullpen.
Smith posted a 1.61 ERA with eight walks and 32 strikeouts across 22⅓ innings in 14 relief appearances for Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. He primarily throws fastballs and sweepers, but also features a splitter and a curveball. Manager A.J. Hinch praised Smith’s performance, saying, “He was a man without a role for a little bit. The move to the bullpen really solidified his aggressiveness in the zone.”
His Triple-A debut took place on May 21, where Smith struck out all three batters he faced in the final inning, showcasing his abilities with a 94.3 mph fastball and impressive sliders.
“I just embraced the role,” Smith said. “Whatever was going to get me to the big leagues was my mindset going into it. I do the same as a reliever.”
Alongside Smith, right-hander Alex Cobb is set to start on Friday for High-A West Michigan as he begins a rehab assignment after a right hip injury sidelined him since December 2024. Cobb is expected to pitch two innings.
Hinch commented on Cobb’s return: “First game action. We don’t know how adrenaline is going to help him. We’re going to read and react as he goes.” Cobb has completed bullpen sessions in preparation and is finally ready to face hitters.
The Tigers also claimed right-handed reliever Ryan Cusick off waivers from the Athletics. Cusick, a former No. 24 overall pick in the 2021 draft, has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo after posting a 6.75 ERA with 13 walks and 11 strikeouts across 14⅔ innings in relief.
As the Tigers continue to shape their roster, fans will be watching closely as Smith makes his MLB debut and Cobb begins his journey back to the mound.
