Timberwolves Adjust DiVincenzo’s Role, Sparking Team Success

The Minnesota Timberwolves have found success by adjusting Donte DiVincenzo‘s role, moving him into the starting lineup and allowing him to play off the ball. This strategic shift comes after the team initially utilized the 27-year-old guard as a primary ball-handler, a role that did not suit his strengths.

DiVincenzo, who previously excelled with the Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks as a catch-and-shoot threat, struggled early this season. Despite his proven track record as an off-ball player, the Timberwolves deployed him as a point guard for 67% of his playing time, a significant departure from his previous roles. This led to speculation about his future with the team ahead of the February 6 trade deadline.

However, the Timberwolves have since corrected course. Over the past three games, DiVincenzo has replaced veteran Mike Conley in the starting lineup, allowing him to focus on his strengths. With Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle handling most of the ball-handling duties, DiVincenzo has thrived, averaging 12.8 points and shooting 39.1% from three-point range. More importantly, the Timberwolves have won all three games, including two against teams with winning records.

DiVincenzo’s resurgence highlights the importance of leveraging players’ strengths. During his time with the Warriors, he averaged 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 39.7% from beyond the arc. Last season with the Knicks, he made the third-most three-pointers in the league and averaged a career-high 15.5 points. Now, the Timberwolves are reaping the benefits of using him in a role that maximizes his skills.

As the Timberwolves continue their push for playoff contention, DiVincenzo’s ability to contribute as a reliable off-ball threat could prove pivotal. His recent performances underscore the value of adaptability and strategic adjustments in the NBA.
