Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards Fined $50,000 for Inappropriate Gesture

LOS ANGELES — Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has been fined $50,000 by the NBA for directing inappropriate language and making an obscene gesture towards a fan during a playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday. The fine was announced by NBA president of league operations Byron Spruell on Tuesday.
The incident took place in the third quarter of Game 1, when Edwards was at the scorer’s table waiting to re-enter the game. Following a timeout, he heard a fan heckling teammate Rudy Gobert.
In defense of Gobert, Edwards shouted, “He got $200 million!” and corrected himself saying, “He got $300 million!” However, the situation escalated when Edwards made a crude comment and grabbed his groin, which was recorded and quickly spread across social media.
This season, Edwards has accumulated a total of $380,000 in fines, marking the most for any player in the league. His previous fines include incidents where he used profanity in postgame interviews and gestured towards officials. Edwards has also led the league in technical fouls this season.
Despite these distractions, the Timberwolves are looking to maintain their momentum as they prepare for Game 2 against the Lakers on Tuesday night. The Timberwolves currently lead the first-round series 1-0 after their 117-95 victory in Game 1.
