Tom Cruise’s Stunt Dedication Scares Director for F1 Film

HOLLYWOOD, CA – Director Joseph Kosinski recently explained why he chose Brad Pitt over Tom Cruise for the lead role in the upcoming film “F1.” This decision came during an interview where Kosinski reflected on his experiences with both actors.
Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise on the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick,” noted that while Cruise is highly skilled and capable, his dedication to pushing limits can be intimidating. “Tom always pushes it to the limit, but at the same time is super capable and very skilled,” he said. “They both have the natural talent for driving. But yeah, I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more.”
Graham Kelly, an action-vehicle supervisor on the film, agreed with Kosinski’s assessment of Cruise’s approach to stunts. “We’d have had a crash,” Kelly remarked, explaining how Cruise’s intensity can lead to risky situations. He added, “I mean, I’ve done loads of ‘Mission: Impossibles’ with Tom, and it’s the most stressful experience for someone like me, building cars for him, doing stunts with him. Whereas Brad listens and he knows his abilities, and I think he’d be the first to say, ‘Yeah, I’m not going to do that.’”
Interestingly, Kosinski was developing a version of “Ford v Ferrari” with both actors initially attached. However, the project did not move forward due to budget constraints. James Mangold ultimately directed the successful film featuring Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
Currently, Cruise is in theaters with “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which has set a new box office record for the enduring franchise. Meanwhile, Pitt’s “F1” is scheduled to hit theaters on June 27, 2025.
