Top Reliever Tanner Scott Remains Unsigned in Slow Free Agent Market

As the MLB offseason drags on, left-handed reliever Tanner Scott remains unsigned, making him the top bullpen arm available in a sluggish free agent market. Scott, known for his high-velocity fastball and dominant slider, has drawn interest from multiple big-market teams, including the Dodgers, Yankees, and Braves, according to reports from Chris Cotillo of MassLive and Sean McAdam.

Scott, who posted a 1.75 ERA over 72 innings last season with the Marlins and Padres, is expected to command a multi-year contract worth around $20 million annually. This would place him among the highest-paid relievers in baseball, alongside Edwin Díaz and Josh Hader. Díaz signed a five-year, $102 million deal with the Mets in 2022, while Hader inked a five-year, $95 million contract with the Padres last winter.

Despite the high price tag, Scott’s performance justifies the interest. The 29-year-old southpaw averaged 97 mph on his fastball and struck out 28.2% of batters faced in 2023. His ability to dominate both left-handed and right-handed hitters makes him a valuable asset for any contender. Scott also showcased his postseason prowess, tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts during the Padres’ Division Series run.

The Braves, who have been linked to Scott, face financial constraints but could still make a move. Atlanta’s payroll currently sits around $218 million, leaving them $25 million below the luxury tax threshold. President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos has indicated the team is open to exceeding the tax if necessary, though their offseason activity has been limited to low-cost signings so far.

Other teams, including the Red Sox, have explored the reliever market but have yet to make a serious push for Scott. Boston, which has already bolstered its bullpen with additions like Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson, remains $26-27 million below the luxury tax threshold. However, competition for Scott is expected to be fierce, with multiple big-market teams vying for his services.

Scott’s market has been unusually quiet, with few relievers signing deals this offseason. This could change as spring training approaches, with teams looking to solidify their bullpens before the season begins. For now, Scott remains the top prize in a free agent class that has yet to fully take shape.
