Tornado Outbreak Causes Destruction in South Florida
The communities in South Florida are grappling with the aftermath of severe weather as multiple tornadoes struck the region ahead of Hurricane Milton‘s anticipated landfall. Reports and videos have been pouring in, particularly highlighting the devastation in Okeechobee and other areas.
The National Weather Service has confirmed multiple tornadoes across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. As of Wednesday afternoon, the area remains under a tornado watch. Viewers have recorded images and videos, showing the widespread damage including overturned cars and debris scattered across roads.
“We’re monitoring the situation closely,” said Chris, a local meteorologist, while discussing the weather developments on-air. He noted, “The weather service has confirmed seven tornadoes thus far from earlier warnings.”
In Okeechobee, viewer videos illustrate violent weather conditions with strong winds propelling debris dangerously across highways. Cars were seen flipped near Dixie Highway and other roads, although no serious injuries were reported.
Neighboring St. Lucie County and the city of Wellington also reported significant tornado activity. Residents in Wellington described scenes of destruction near the Wellington National Golf Course area, where homes experienced damage, and trees were uprooted. Janny Rodriguez, a local anchor, reported hearing from residents who described the tornado as sounding “like a bomb went off,” indicative of its force.
The National Weather Service’s Miami office took to their social media platform to warn: “TORNADO ON THE GROUND NEAR WELLINGTON, FLORIDA. SEEK SHELTER NOW!” emphasizing the urgency for residents in affected areas to find safety immediately.
As South Florida continues to face severe weather challenges, officials urge residents to monitor weather updates and heed all warnings and safety advisories to ensure personal safety.
