Tornado Threat In Minneapolis April 2025

MINNEAPOLIS — Strong storms are expected to hit the Twin Cities on Monday afternoon, raising concerns for potential tornadoes in the area. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for parts of the Upper Midwest, signaling that conditions may support tornado formation.

Officials warn residents to be prepared and stay informed. A Tornado Watch indicates that tornadoes are possible, whereas a Tornado Warning signifies that a tornado has been spotted or indicated by radar, posing a direct threat to life and property.

The City of Minneapolis has alerted residents to take precautionary measures, urging them to review emergency plans and secure their homes. The Edina Police and Fire Departments emphasized the importance of identifying storm shelter locations and ensuring that communication devices are fully charged.

Monday’s severe weather is anticipated to arrive around 5 a.m., with the most dangerous storm conditions expected in the late afternoon and evening. Forecasters predict all severe weather threats, including harmful hail, strong winds, and tornadoes.

As of now, nearly 47 million people across Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota could be affected. The Storm Prediction Center has rated parts of the Minneapolis area at a level 4 out of 5 for severe weather risk.

Minneapolis officials have recommended that residents finalize their safety plans and remain vigilant as conditions develop throughout the day. In addition to seeking shelter when warnings are issued, those driving are advised against attempting to outrun a tornado and to instead find a safe location.

Already, early storms have passed through the area, bringing brief heavy rains but without any immediate weather warnings. The atmosphere remains unstable, heightening the risk of severe weather as the day progresses.

As the city braces for these potential storms, officials are prepared for necessary emergency operations and have activated their emergency center, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
