Tornado Touches Down Near Hyannis, Nebraska, Causing Concern

HYANNIS, Neb. — A large wedge tornado was spotted near the village of Hyannis on Sunday, April 27, 2025. The storm was first reported by weather spotters near Ashby, moving east at about 20 mph.
Video footage captured by storm chaser Nathan Moore shows the dramatic moment the tornado touched down. Several other storm chasers have since shared images and videos of the tornado on social media.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Tornado Warning for parts of Cherry and Grant Counties, emphasizing the severity of the storm. A tornado watch is also in effect for areas in Colorado, Nebraska, and South Dakota until 11 PM MDT, indicating a significant risk of severe weather.
As of now, there are no confirmed reports of injuries or fatalities. Local authorities and meteorologists are monitoring the situation closely. However, residents are advised to take precautions and seek shelter due to the tornado’s potential to cause significant damage.
The NWS confirmed that the tornado has the capability to produce hail up to two inches in diameter. It is expected to reach areas near Ashby around 6:05 PM MDT and Hyannis around 6:35 PM MDT.
Portions of Highway 2 and Highway 61 have been included in the tornado warning area. The NWS warns that flying debris can pose a danger to anyone without adequate shelter.
A previous tornado warning had been issued at 5:16 PM, following sightings of a funnel cloud near Ellsworth. Residents are advised to seek safety in basements or interior rooms on the lowest floor of sturdy buildings and avoid windows.
