Following Saturday night’s victory against the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach expressed frustration with the defensive performance of his second line consisting of William Nylander, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Max Domi.

Over the past five games, this trio has struggled defensively, with alarming statistics such as being on the ice for over 40 shots per 60 minutes, significantly higher than their teammates. Despite Coach Keefe‘s criticisms, these players rank poorly in defensive wins above replacement (WAR) in the NHL.

Looking at their defensive performance over the last three years, it is clear that improvement is needed. With the Maple Leafs having limited options in their top six, a trade may be necessary to address their defensive woes.

At last year’s trade deadline, the Maple Leafs acquired Ryan O'Reilly from the St. Louis Blues, but a player of his caliber may not be available this year. However, rumors suggest that Boone Jenner of the Columbus Blue Jackets could be a suitable fit alongside William Nylander.

Boone Jenner, a sturdy center signed through 2025-26, has excelled defensively while also contributing offensively. Given the Blue Jackets‘ focus on developing younger talent like Adam Fantilli, Kent Johnson, and Cole Sillinger, acquiring Jenner could benefit both teams.

With Jenner’s strong defensive capabilities and scoring touch, he could provide the support William Nylander needs on the second line. Until a trade materializes, the Maple Leafs will continue to address their defensive deficiencies with the current lineup.
