Toronto Sun Reporter Sparks Debate with Toronto Maple Leafs Stars
Steve Simmons, a well-known journalist from the Toronto Sun, is no stranger to provoking lively discussions, especially regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs. Recently, Simmons found himself at the center of attention during media interactions with several players from the team.
During a press conference, Simmons posed an unusual question to Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll, inquiring about the potentiality of a Stanley Cup Final featuring the Dallas Stars. Woll, seemingly taken aback by the hypothetical question, responded with slight bemusement, “Uh… yeah, isn’t it possible?” gaining a smile as he adjusted to the unusual line of questioning. This interaction was soon shared on social media, making it the subject of amusement among hockey fans on platforms like X.
Later, Simmons engaged in a tense dialogue with Leafs captain Auston Matthews. He questioned Matthews about NHL player salaries, hinting at whether they might be considered underpaid compared to other sports. “Are hockey players underpaid for what they bring to the table?” Simmons asked. Matthews, known for his composed presence both on and off the ice, skillfully navigated the query. “Steve… I don’t know. I mean, I’m grateful to play in the NHL,” Matthews replied, sidestepping the potentially contentious topic.
This incident is not the first time Simmons has drawn criticism or sparked controversy with his writings. In 2022, he faced backlash for an op-ed comparing Akim Aliu to Wayne Simmonds, aligning it to broader issues of race in sports. Furthermore, his scathing critique of Mitch Marner during the playoffs, where he accused Marner of an “invisible” performance, also attracted significant negative attention from Leafs fans.
The Toronto Maple Leafs, as they conclude their training camp, are preparing to open their season against their longstanding rivals, the Montreal Canadiens. The team is entering the season with a refreshed strategy and renewed focus under head coach Craig Berube’s leadership. Matthews, coming off a stellar performance last season, is poised to lead his team with increased confidence as they aim for success in the playoffs.
