Towns’ Versatility Shines as Knicks Lead Celtics 2-0 in Playoff Series

NEW YORK, NY – May 10, 2025 – Karl Anthony Towns has showcased his exceptional versatility as the New York Knicks take a surprising 2-0 lead against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Despite being known for his remarkable 3-point shooting, Towns has not made a single 3-pointer in the first two games of the series. This revelation might be shocking, especially as he is often labeled as one of the best shooting big men in NBA history.
In the first two games, Towns has taken only two attempts beyond the arc, raising questions about his impact. Nevertheless, he has found other ways to contribute significantly. His efficiency in the post has surged during the playoffs, landing him in the 94th percentile as he has converted 14 of 27 post-up attempts.
Towns has repeatedly taken advantage of mismatches against smaller defenders like Jaylen Brown and has effectively posted up against seasoned defenders like Al Horford, converting difficult shots with ease.
Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau praised Towns’ offensive skill set, describing him as a player who can score in various ways, both off the dribble and in the post. “He has tremendous confidence and amazing touch,” Thibodeau said. “He shoots the ball like a guard.”
Defensively, Towns has also made strides, with his rim protection improving during the playoffs. His defensive rating at the rim has risen from the 19th percentile during the regular season to the 58th percentile so far in the postseason.
Additionally, Towns’ rebounding has been crucial for the Knicks. He averaged 12.8 rebounds per game in the regular season, and in the playoffs, he maintains a strong 11.3 rebounds per game, notably excelling in offensive rebounds.
His teammate Jalen Brunson highlighted Towns’ contributions, stating, “The way he gives us energy and goes and gets rebounds doesn’t go unnoticed.”
As the series continues, Towns remains focused on improving team performance despite the Knicks’ lead. “We can’t keep doing these 20-point leads for Boston and hope to come back and win the game,” Towns said after Game 2. “We’ve got to play better, shoot better, and execute better.” The third game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
