A tragic explosion in a residential area of Benwell, Newcastle has claimed the lives of two individuals, including a seven-year-old boy named Archie York. The incident occurred at approximately 00:45 BST on Wednesday, resulting in the destruction of six flats on Violet Close. Emergency crews discovered the body of an unidentified man, believed to be in his 30s, as they sifted through the debris later in the day.

Archie York was pronounced dead at the scene of the explosion, leaving the community devastated. His aunt, Abbie York, described him as “a loving boy, with a cheeky little grin on his face all of the time,” to the BBC’s North of England correspondent, Fiona Trott. The York family, who had recently moved to the area, were also affected by the blast, with Archie’s parents and his two-month-old brother receiving hospital treatment. They are currently under the care of relatives.

Superintendent Darren Adams from Northumbria Police extended his condolences, stating: “Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the two people who have tragically lost their lives. Specialist officers are supporting their loved ones and we would urge everyone to respect their privacy at this time.”

The explosion resulted in injuries to five additional adults and one child, all of whom, except one man in his 30s, have been discharged from medical care. The man remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to police reports.

An ongoing investigation, led by emergency services and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), aims to determine the cause of the explosion. Specialist gas engineers have been deployed to the scene as part of this effort. Superintendent Adams cautioned against speculation, emphasizing the complexity and time-consuming nature of the investigation due to the extensive damage.

The incident led to the evacuation of several families from the council-maintained property, Newcastle City Council reported. The Labour-led council assured that housing officers are collaborating to provide residents with temporary accommodation and are working towards long-term housing solutions.

The local community has rallied in support of those affected, donating essential items, including baby clothes, to assist the displaced families. The council maintains that while some evacuees are with friends and relatives, others are receiving temporary accommodation assistance.
