An unfortunate tragedy has befallen the Columbus Blue Jackets as the team confirmed the death of forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, on Thursday night. They reportedly died near their hometown of Salem in Salem County, New Jersey.

At just 31 years old, Gaudreau was regarded as the top forward for the Blue Jackets, having joined the team from the Calgary Flames. Both he and Matthew were expected to be groomsmen at their sister Katie‘s wedding scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia, with Gaudreau’s wife, Meredith, serving as the maid of honor.

Gaudreau’s passing comes three years after another tragic event that occurred on July 4, 2021, in Novi, Michigan, at the home of Manny Legacy, the team’s former goalie coach. He was a father to two young children, daughter Noa and son Johnny, both born in Columbus.

This summer, Gaudreau aimed to have a rejuvenated season following two disappointing years. His offseason training included participating for the United States in the men’s world championships in Czechia, where he showcased his skills with three goals and eight assists, totaling 11 points across eight games.

During the regular season, Gaudreau led the Blue Jackets with a tally of 12 goals and 48 assists in 81 games last season, although this marked a 14-point decline from the previous season. His performance was significantly lower than his final season with the Flames, where he finished with 55 more points.

Gaudreau’s decision to join the Blue Jackets in July 2022 for a seven-year, $68.25 million deal faced criticism in the NHL, especially from fans in Calgary. However, Gaudreau remained steadfast in his choice, citing the desire to raise his children in Columbus, closer to family in New Jersey.

Throughout his tenure, Gaudreau was inspired by the unwavering support of Blue Jackets fans, who continued to attend games despite the team’s struggles. His ambition was to bring joy to these supporters, especially with new opportunities opening up as the season approached, including a top line with new teammate Sean Monahan.
