Trailer Released for ‘Freakier Friday,’ Sequel to 2003 Comedy

BURBANK, Calif. — Disney has unveiled the first trailer for “Freakier Friday,” the much-anticipated sequel to the 2003 comedy classic. Scheduled for release on August 8, 2025, the film stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, who reprise their roles as mother-daughter duo Anna and Tess Coleman.

This new installment picks up years after Anna and Tess originally swapped bodies, delving into the intriguing dynamics of a multigenerational family. In “Freakier Friday,” Anna has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. The trailer showcases a new twist, featuring a four-way body swap involving Anna, Tess, and the two new characters. As they face the challenges of blending families, the women discover that, indeed, lightning can strike twice.

Director Nisha Ganatra, known for her work on Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales,” leads the project while Jordan Weiss, creator of “Dollface,” pens the script. The film also sees the return of original cast members including Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao.

In a statement, Curtis expressed excitement about reuniting with Lohan. “It has been a pleasure to work with my dear friend Lindsay, who brings so much joy to our set every day,” she said. Lohan echoed similar sentiments during a previous D23 Expo appearance in August 2024, thanking the cast and crew for their dedication.

The original “Freaky Friday,” based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, follows a mother and daughter who magically swap bodies after receiving a mystical fortune cookie. The film received critical acclaim and commercial success, boasting an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Production for the sequel wrapped in 2024, and both Curtis and Lohan shared their joy on social media, hinting at the film’s positive reception during focus group screenings. As fans eagerly await the theatrical release, both stars are eager to see how audiences will react to the new story.
