Trevor Story Faces Tough Season as Red Sox Struggle

MILWAUKEE — Trevor Story has hit a rough patch this season, entering Friday’s game in Atlanta with one of the worst slumps in Red Sox history. The 32-year-old shortstop began the season strong, hitting .337 with five home runs through the first 23 games. However, since April 22, his performance has drastically declined, with a batting average of just .131 over 31 games.
Story’s struggles are reflected in his low on-base percentage of .191 and a slugging percentage of .164, leading him to be listed among only six other Red Sox players to have an OPS under .360 in a similar stretch this century. “Performance hasn’t been there, and that’s been frustrating,” Story admitted.
During a recent series, Story faced reduced playing time, with manager Alex Cora substituting him in favor of a pinch hitter. “It never feels good,” Story said. “But you can understand it. It’s about winning the game.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on team success rather than individual struggles.
Despite doubts regarding the reversibility of his slump, Story remains optimistic. His reported improvements in plate discipline and swing mechanics have led to signs of encouragement, even though results have not yet followed. “It just takes one at-bat, one swing, one take to get back on track,” he stated.
Injuries from previous seasons have also cast doubt on his current performance. While Story does not blame his shoulder for his slump, he acknowledges the need to maintain effective swing adjustments. “Adjustability is something I’ve always had,” he said. “I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily the shoulder that holds me back.”
Manager Cora confirmed Story will continue his role as shortstop, despite concerns over defensive metrics. “He’s our shortstop and we’ve just got to get him going offensively,” Cora declared. Story remains committed to rediscovering his confidence, stating, “Every day I wake up grateful to be able to have the opportunity to play this game.”
As the Red Sox continue to struggle, Story’s improvement may be crucial in regaining offensive momentum. The team faces a challenging schedule ahead, with games against the Brewers and the need for stronger performances from its players.
