REGINA, Saskatchewan — Former Minnesota native Trey Lance is set to join the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the 2025 Canadian Football League (CFL) season, according to a report from TSN‘s Dave Naylor. Lance, who gained recognition at Marshall High School from 2014 to 2017, is transitioning to the CFL after spending the 2024 season as a third-string quarterback with the Dallas Cowboys.

Lance was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, after the team traded up from the 12th pick to select him. At 6 feet 4 inches and 224 pounds, Lance was highly touted as a prospect from North Dakota State University. However, his tenure with the 49ers was marred by injuries.

In 2022, an ankle injury limited Lance to just two games, creating an opportunity for rookie Brock Purdy to take over the starting position. After an underwhelming run in San Francisco and then having brief stints with Dallas, where he completed 56.6% of his passes for a total of 1,063 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions over four seasons, Lance is eager to revitalize his career in Canada.

Despite the setbacks, Lance remains only 25 years old, turning that age in May. His performance in the CFL may open doors for a potential return to the NFL. “It’s an opportunity for me to showcase what I can do against some of the best players in the league,” Lance said. “I’m excited for this new chapter in my career and to prove myself once again on the field.”
