Florida Gators Basketball Team White House Ceremony

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump honored the University of Florida men’s basketball team on Wednesday during a ceremony at the White House celebrating their 2025 NCAA championship title. The Gators defeated the Houston Cougars 65-63 in a nail-biting title game in San Antonio, Texas, in April.

Trump praised the team, particularly for their resilience throughout the tournament. “Lesser teams would have crumbled,” Trump said, recalling how Florida overcame a 12-point deficit to secure the victory. He highlighted the team’s remarkable ability to win four comeback games in the tournament.

Florida’s head coach, Todd Golden, received accolades from the president for his leadership. “Congratulations to a really great young head coach, Todd Golden, on the entire job he did,” Trump stated. The coach later presented Trump with an autographed No. 47 jersey, signifying his term as the 47th president.

The ceremony took place in the East Room of the White House and included appearances from notable Florida political figures, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and former Gator football star Tim Tebow. Trump noted Rubio’s enthusiasm as the biggest fan of the Gators.

During the ceremony, Trump’s interaction with players included a playful conversation with guard Alijah Martin, who made crucial free throws with just 46.5 seconds left on the clock. When Martin expressed he wasn’t nervous during the pressure of the moment, Trump quipped about the significance of making those shots.

The Florida Gators‘ championship victory marks the third national title for the program in men’s basketball, joining their record of three championships in football. The team celebrated their title with a tour of the Oval Office following the ceremony.

Coach Golden expressed pride in his players and staff, emphasizing their hard work and dedication. “Our goal is to be here again next year,” he said. The team’s performance during the tournament is seen as a testament to their determination and teamwork.

As the event concluded, Trump received a basketball signed by the entire team, further solidifying the connection between the Gators and the White House.
