Tyler Herro Emerges as Key Player for Miami Heat Despite Team’s Rocky Start
The Miami Heat, currently standing at 3-3, are off to a familiarly rocky start to the season. Despite their record, the team has only managed to beat lower-tier teams and has not secured a win against a top-tier team since April 2nd. Key players Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler have not shown consistent greatness, and the team’s starters have a combined minus rating of -20.89 in 79 minutes played together.
However, one bright spot for the Heat has been the performance of Tyler Herro. Herro has taken a significant leap in his game, embracing a new and valuable role that is benefiting both him and the team. He has been arguably the best player on the Heat this season, despite some struggles in the second half of games.
Herro has become more aggressive in attacking closeouts and getting into the paint, shooting an impressive 69% at the rim. He has also committed to an off-ball role, taking 53% of his shots from 3-point range, a career high. Herro is averaging 5.2 catch-and-shoot 3-point attempts per game, shooting a scorching 48% from beyond the arc. This increased volume and accuracy in his shooting have significantly enhanced his value to the team and the league.
After facing scrutiny last summer, particularly regarding a potential trade for Damian Lillard, Herro’s efficiency and role have silenced many critics. While defensive concerns remain, his shooting efficiency has been consistently strong, with a career 3-point shooting percentage near 40%. This season, he is shooting 44% on 8.7 3-point attempts per game, numbers that are expected to rise as he continues in his off-ball catch-and-shoot role.
Herro’s quick starts have been a constant for the Heat this season, with him often setting the tone in the first quarter. This early momentum has been crucial for a team that has otherwise struggled with consistency.
