Tyson Barrie Joins Calgary Flames on One-Year Deal
Tyson Barrie, a seasoned NHL defenseman, has joined the Calgary Flames under a one-year contract worth $1.25 million, as reported by the team’s management. Barrie, aged 33, previously attended the Flames’ training camp on a professional tryout agreement before securing a spot on the team.
Flames head coach Ryan Huska expressed enthusiasm over Barrie’s signing, highlighting the defensive player’s extensive experience in the NHL and his prowess in offensive play. “We’re excited to have him,” stated Huska, emphasizing Barrie’s potential to enhance the Flames’ power-play strategy.
Barrie boasts a notable record of 505 career points, with 109 goals and 396 assists, positioning him as one of the top active NHL defensemen. His tenure in the league includes stints with the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Nashville Predators. Barrie, a right-handed shot, is particularly praised for his power-play contributions.
The Flames anticipate that despite Barrie starting the season as their seventh defenseman, he will significantly contribute when opportunities arise. Barrie’s career statistics are substantial, with his offensive capabilities counterbalanced by concerns over his defensive performance, as underlined by his career minus-76 rating.
Barrie, reflecting on his career and future prospects, commented, “It’s just a new perspective, I’m going to try to play this game as long as I can.” As the Flames finalize their defensive lineups, Barrie is expected to supplement Calgary’s defensive roster, following notable changes that included acquiring Kevin Bahl and Daniil Miromanov.
The Flames, who are preparing to end their pre-season against the Winnipeg Jets, have made additional roster adjustments. This includes reassigning Walker Duehr, Dryden Hunt, and Jarred Tinordi to the Calgary Wranglers. As Calgary gears up for the forthcoming NHL season, Barrie’s signing is regarded as a strategic move to enhance the team’s overall performance and depth.
