LOS ANGELES (AP) — As the NCAA tournament kicks off this weekend, the UCLA women’s basketball team is not only looking to maintain momentum but also to solidify a historic season. The Bruins, who have secured the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, boast a remarkable record of 30 wins and only 2 losses this season, creating an opportunity to achieve their first Final Four appearance.

UCLA, led by junior guard Kiki Rice, recently clinched their first Big Ten championship title, defeating crosstown rival USC in the final match. “That was really fun,” said forward Lauren Betts. “But we want to do it again.” The Bruins aim to extend their success by taking on Southern University at Pauley Pavilion on Friday.

Rice noted, “I mean, obviously we’re expected to do well, (but) I think that comes from within us and this group. We have really high expectations of each other.” Such remarks underscore the team’s commitment to internal motivation and unity as they navigate the pressures of the tournament.

Leading the charge, Betts has made history as well, becoming the first UCLA player to be named to the AP All-America first team, an honor recognizing her pivotal role this season. Averaging 19.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game, she represents the backbone of UCLA’s formidable offensive and defensive strategies.

Head coach Cori Close praised the team’s recent performances, emphasizing that their player-led approach was a critical element in their success. “How they took control of the situation was absolutely player-led,” said Close. “And that’ll be a reference point for not only the rest of the NCAA Tournament, but for the rest of their lives.”

The Bruins are determined to capitalize on their strengths as they progress through the tournament. They are expected to draw a sizable crowd at their home court, with support from local fans boosting their morale. “We’re feeling our best at the most important time of the year,” Rice added confidently.

With a historic season behind them, the Bruins understand that success in the NCAA Tournament requires not just talent but an unwavering commitment to teamwork and improvement. As they prepare to face the Southern Jaguars, who recently celebrated their own NCAA Tournament victory, UCLA is ready to embrace the challenges ahead.
