No. 3 UConn Set to Challenge No. 7 BYU in Boston Showdown
BOSTON, MA – The No. 3 UConn Huskies will face off against the No. 7 BYU Cougars on Saturday night at the TD Garden as part of the Hall of Fame Series. This highly anticipated matchup marks a significant challenge for both teams as they look to continue their undefeated starts in the season.
UConn enters the game with impressive performances, winning their opening three games by an average of 38 points. They recently defeated Columbia 89-62, led by Solo Ball’s 23 points, Alex Karaban’s 20 points, and Tarris Reed Jr.’s 19 points. Reed, having missed the season opener due to a hamstring injury, has cemented himself with averages of 19.5 points and 10 rebounds over the last two games.
“This time of year, people are challenging themselves in these nonconference games,” UConn head coach Dan Hurley said. “We’re excited to get a chance to play in Boston this weekend against one of the best teams in the country. So it should be fun.”
BYU also comes into this matchup undefeated, winning their first three games by an average of 22.3 points. Most recently, they secured an 85-68 victory over Delaware, with Richie Saunders and Robert Wright III each scoring 26 points. Dybantsa, a freshman standout from Brockton, Massachusetts, added 18 points and is expected to bring extra energy to the game with many friends and family in attendance.
“We got a team of good guys all the way across the board,” Saunders said. “It’s going to be guys stepping up every game, but we’re here to win.”
The game will also feature a more serious note for BYU as starting guard Kennard Davis Jr. was arrested for alleged drunk driving earlier this week, raising questions about his availability against UConn.
Both teams are experiencing a strength of schedule increase as UConn will soon face No. 5 Arizona, among other ranked opponents in their upcoming games. The matchup against BYU serves not only as a test for UConn but also as a possible indicator of their vulnerabilities. “It’s a good barometer for where you’re at,” Hurley added. “You just focus on a one-game-at-a-time mentality.”
This evening’s clash is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on FOX.
