UFC Star B.J. Penn Arrested Again for Alleged Assault in Hawaii
HILO, Hawaii — Former UFC champion B.J. Penn was arrested Tuesday morning on charges of third-degree assault, his sixth arrest of 2025. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. at a residence on Kanoa Street in Hilo, where a 45-year-old man reported that Penn punched and kicked him multiple times.
According to the Hawaii Police Department, the victim managed to escape and contact authorities. He later sought medical treatment at Hilo Benioff Medical Center for his injuries. Police located Penn later that morning at 11:50 a.m. on Lehua Street, where he was arrested without incident.
Penn, 46, posted a $1,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Hilo District Court on December 2. A conviction for third-degree assault in Hawaii could result in up to one year in jail.
The latest arrest adds to a troubling pattern of legal issues for Penn throughout the year. In May, he was charged with family abuse after allegedly shoving his mother, Lorraine Shin, into a parked car and stealing her mail. Shin later filed for a restraining order against Penn, citing psychological abuse and accusing him of believing that his family members had been replaced by impostors.
In September, Penn was arrested twice for violating the restraining order. Earlier in October, a judge ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation due to concerns over his mental well-being.
Penn, known for being the first non-Brazilian to win the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship at the black belt level, retired from mixed martial arts in 2019. His career was filled with accolades, including titles in both the lightweight and welterweight divisions. However, his personal life has seen a significant decline, leading to public concern over his mental health.
Despite his achievements inside the octagon, Penn’s recent behavior has worried fans and friends alike. His situation continues to evolve, with further developments expected as he prepares for his upcoming court date.
