Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh has clinched the gold medal in a thrilling women’s high jump final at the Olympics, held on Sunday, August 4. She was in excellent form, clearing 2.00 meters on her first try, while Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers took the silver after needing three attempts to achieve the same height.

Both Mahuchikh and Olyslagers celebrated their impressive jumps, but it was Mahuchikh who stood out as she not only won gold but also dedicated her victory to her country. ‘I dreamed of this moment when I started my track and field career,’ she shared with Olympics.com. ‘I thank God that I jumped [over at 2.00m] with my first attempt and that gave me the gold medal that I want to dedicate to my country,’ she added.

Meanwhile, Olyslagers, who previously took home a silver medal at the last Olympics three years ago, reflected on the love she has for high jump and the journey that brought her here. ‘I started high jump when I was eight years old. I wasn’t the best at it at the beginning, it was that love that carried me through. ‘ she commented.

After the competition, Mahuchikh, who has recently set a world record of 2.10 meters, took a celebratory lap, waving the Ukrainian flag alongside bronze medallists Iryna Gerashchenko and Eleanor Patterson. This moment not only showcased her athletic prowess but also the strength and spirit of Ukraine during challenging times.

In a heartfelt message to her country, Mahuchikh stated, ‘I want to thank the armed forces of Ukraine and all the military, volunteers and people who support us. These are medals for the whole country.’ After making her way around the track, she embraced supporters, declaring, ‘Ukraine, I’m bringing the gold home!’
