MONTREAL, Canada — The United States triumphed over Finland 6-1 in the opening round of the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off at the Bell Centre on Thursday night. This match set the stage for the four-team tournament featuring the U.S., Canada, Finland, and Sweden.
The Americans displayed remarkable skill and resilience, scoring four goals in the final period after being tied 1-1 at the two-thirds mark. U.S. forward Matthew Tkachuk, who scored twice, helped spark a potent offense that ultimately overwhelmed the Finnish squad.
“We knew we had to be patient, and eventually it clicked for us,” Tkachuk said. “We felt confident throughout the game, and we knew if we kept pushing, we’d get the chances.”
Finland took an early lead in the first period, with forward Artturi Lehkonen finding the net, but the U.S. quickly responded. Brady Tkachuk tied the game, showcasing the Tkachuk brothers’ combined impact on the ice.
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, the leading candidate for the Vezina Trophy awarded to the league’s best goalie, also played a vital role in the U.S. victory. He made key saves when Finland was generating chances, ensuring that the Americans could find their rhythm offensively.
Throughout the game, the U.S. outshot Finland, tallying 40 shots compared to Finland’s 25. Their superior offensive play maintained intense pressure on Finnish goaltender Juuse Saros, who faced the brunt of the attacks.
“Jake Guentzel’s goal mere seconds after Tkachuk’s was a turning point for us,” Tkachuk said. “It added a whole new energy and momentum to our game.”
Looking ahead, Finland coach Antti Pennanen acknowledged the need for adjustments. “We started strong but faced issues keeping up the pace,” he said. “We need to tighten our defense and find ways to better connect offensively to compete against teams like the U.S. and Sweden.”
Next up for Finland is a matchup against Sweden, where they will aim to recover from this setback. For the U.S., the victory is a crucial boost as they prepare to face Canada, setting up an anticipated clash between the two rivals.
