Victor Wembanyama Amazes Opponents with His Size as the 76ers Defeat Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs and the Philadelphia 76ers clashed on Monday night in an eagerly-anticipated game that featured the first matchup between rising star Victor Wembanyama and reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid. A highly anticipated duel, Wembanyama did not disappoint, scoring an impressive 33 points in just 28 minutes. Meanwhile, Embiid etched his name in history by becoming one of only nine players to score at least 70 points in a game, ultimately leading the 76ers to a 133-123 victory.
Despite having played in the NBA for 37 games already, opponents are still in awe of Wembanyama’s extraordinary size and length. Kelly Oubre Jr. of the 76ers was the latest player left astounded by Wemby’s physical attributes during their matchup. Oubre was seen touching and examining the French phenom in disbelief, creating an amusing moment on the court.
Ever since he emerged as a teenage basketball prodigy, Wembanyama’s height and wingspan have captured attention globally. The 20-year-old stands an imposing 7’4” tall barefoot, boasting an eight-foot wingspan. Additionally, he wears a special size-20.5 shoe. Wembanyama’s mobility, passing ability, shooting range, and strong defense make him one of the most remarkable players to enter the NBA in the last two decades.
Notably, Wembanyama towered over Oubre, who himself stands at 6’7” – a significant height by NBA standards. As they jogged down the court during the first half of Monday’s game, cameras caught Oubre playfully attempting to measure himself against Wembanyama. In a lighthearted moment, Oubre jokingly reached out and touched the French sensation more than 20 times within a span of just 10 seconds. Wembanyama remained focused on the game, allowing Oubre to have his fun.
While Wembanyama is still getting accustomed to the NBA, the league is also adjusting to his exceptional talent. The young player stands out on a struggling San Antonio Spurs team with a record of 8-35, positioning himself to become their next star big man, following in the footsteps of legendary players like Tim Duncan and David Robinson. Wemby has impressively scored at least 24 points in his last five games and currently leads the NBA in blocks per game, averaging more than three blocks every night.
