T.j. Hockenson Minnesota Vikings Tight End

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings have heavily invested in tight end T.J. Hockenson, making him one of the top four highest-paid players at his position this season, according to Spotrac. As the Vikings head into the 2025 season, they have increasingly relied on Hockenson in their passing game due to injuries on the offensive line.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell emphasized Hockenson’s importance, stating, “For T.J., I would put a lot of things he does well ahead of helping on the edges. It’s kind of a necessary thing when certain games and situations happen, but there’s no question we want him to be heavily involved in the game.”

This past Sunday, Hockenson faced his former team, the Detroit Lions, but the game did not showcase the breakout performance fans had hoped for. Despite his limited stats, it may have quelled trade rumors regarding the tight end ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

As of December, Hockenson will be two years removed from a significant knee injury that sidelined him for a substantial part of the 2023 season. While he has shown moments of promise, he is still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL, impacting his performance this year.

Through nine games, Hockenson has averaged under six yards per target. So far, he has recorded 29 receptions for 233 yards and two touchdowns, a performance that some might consider below par for a player of his caliber. During the match against the Lions, he caught just two passes for 11 yards, including a critical drop on third down.

However, he did contribute to the team’s success, helping young quarterback J.J. McCarthy during a crucial touchdown drive. Hockenson caught a seven-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone, giving the Vikings a lead they maintained for the rest of the game.

With Hockenson’s leadership and ability to support McCarthy, it seems highly improbable the Vikings would consider trading him before the deadline. Following their recent win against the Lions, the Vikings have plenty to play for this season.
