Vinny Capra’s Heroics Lead Brewers to Thrilling Walk-Off Win in Spring Training

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Milwaukee Brewers‘ Vinny Capra delivered an electric performance in the spring training opener, hitting two home runs, including a game-winning blast in the ninth inning against the Cincinnati Reds on February 22, 2025.
Capra’s walk-off home run capped an intense game that saw multiple lead changes. Despite an early deficit, the Brewers rallied to secure an 8-7 victory at Salt River Fields.
The Reds struck first, scoring three runs in the second inning. Brewers pitcher Grant Anderson faced challenges, issuing two walks and surrendering back-to-back singles to TJ Friedl and Gavin Lux, who drove in runs. Anderson was replaced by Nick Merkel, who managed to end the inning with a third out.
“We knew it would be a tough game, but we kept pushing,” Capra said. “It’s what spring training is all about—getting everyone involved and finding ways to win.”
The Reds continued to build their lead, with additional runs scored by Thomas Pannone and Vinny Nittoli yielding gains for Cincinnati off Brewers pitching. However, Milwaukee kept pace, igniting a comeback beginning in the sixth inning.
With the score at 5-3, the Brewers’ offense came alive. Andruw Monasterio led off with a double, followed by a walk from Luis Lara. Capra stepped up to the plate and connected for a three-run homer on a 3-1 count, pulling the Brewers closer.
The Cincinnati Reds managed to tie the game with a home run from Ernesto Martinez Jr. in the seventh inning, but the Brewers appeared poised to take control when Capra delivered yet again in the ninth. After the Reds took a late lead off a two-run single from PJ Higgins in the eighth, Milwaukee needed a response.
In a dramatic ninth inning, Capra faced off against reliever Alan Busenitz. Following two singles from his teammates, Capra sealed the game with a walk-off home run, sending the Brewers’ bench into a frenzy.
“That’s how you want to start the spring,” said Brewers manager Craig Counsell. “Vinny delivered in key moments, and that’s what you look for in these early games.”
The Brewers’ season will continue with a match against another split-squad team the following day, with Aaron Ashby set to take the mound.
“We’re looking for consistency,” added Counsell. “These spring games give our players a chance to find their rhythm before the regular season begins.”
