Walmart Announces John Furner as New CEO, Succeeding Doug McMillon
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Nov. 14, 2025 — Walmart Inc. has elected John Furner as the next President and Chief Executive Officer, effective February 1, 2026, the company announced today. Furner will replace Doug McMillon, who will retire on January 31, 2026, but will remain on the Board of Directors until the next annual shareholders’ meeting to ensure a smooth transition.
“John Furner is the right leader to guide Walmart into our next chapter of growth and transformation,” said Greg Penner, Chairman of Walmart Inc. “His extensive experience and deep understanding of our business, gained over more than 30 years, make him the ideal successor.”
McMillon, who has served as CEO for over a decade, expressed gratitude for his time at the company. “Serving as Walmart’s CEO has been a great honor,” he said. “I’m incredibly proud of what our associates accomplished and deeply grateful for their commitment.”
Furner has been with Walmart since 1993, starting as an hourly associate. In his previous role as President and CEO of Walmart U.S., he led the company through significant digital advancements and focused on associate engagement. “I am deeply honored by the trust the Board has placed in me,” Furner commented.
The transition comes as Walmart aims to navigate a new era driven by technology and innovation. McMillon noted that Furner’s leadership will be critical in this AI-driven transformation. “He’s uniquely capable of leading the company through this next phase,” he said.
As part of the succession plan, the company will announce Furner’s successor for the role of CEO of Walmart U.S. before the end of fiscal 2026.
